CMBAbout

World-class software, built from Cameroon.

CMBYTES exists to show something that shouldn’t need showing: that the products people depend on — anywhere in the world — can be designed and engineered here.

01Why we exist

Good software for the problems in front of us.

Cameroon has extraordinary engineering talent, and a long list of problems software should already have solved: savings groups run from notebooks, exam preparation from photocopies, freight booked through a chain of phone calls. Too often, the software that does exist was designed elsewhere — for someone else’s networks, languages and habits.

We started CMBYTES to close that gap from both ends: to build for African realities with the rigour of the best teams anywhere, and to build for clients anywhere with the perspective of engineers who’ve learned to make things work under real constraints.

Constraints are a good teacher. A system that works on a weak network in Bafoussam works everywhere.

02Origins

From Cameroon, for anywhere.

We’re proud of where we’re from, and we don’t ask for allowances because of it. The products we build here are held to the same standard as software built in London, Lagos or San Francisco — and increasingly, they’re used there too.

03Principles

What we hold ourselves to.

Five ideas we use to settle arguments, review code and decide who to hire.

  1. 01

    Craft

We care how things are made, not only whether they work: clear interfaces, careful words, code we're proud to hand over.

  2. 02

    Ownership

We own outcomes, not tickets. If something we built misbehaves at 2 a.m., it's our problem too.

  3. 03

    Simplicity

The simplest design that meets the requirement wins. Every layer of complexity has to earn its place.

  4. 04

    Reliability

We build for a system's third year. Predictable, boring production is the goal — and the compliment.

  5. 05

    Continuous learning

Reviews that teach, time to go deep, and the habit of writing down what we learn so the next person starts ahead.

04Careers

Do the best work of your career. From here.

We hire engineers, designers and product people who care about craft and want hard problems. We look less at which frameworks you know and more at how you think.

  • Small, senior teams

Three to six people who own an outcome end to end, with the client, from discovery to production.

  • Decisions in writing

Short design docs for anything hard to reverse. Anyone can catch up in an afternoon.

  • Working software, weekly

Every week we demo something that runs. No slideware, no surprises at the end of a phase.

  • Reviews that teach

Every change is reviewed, and reviewers explain the why. It's how juniors become seniors here.
